St.Andrew’s Church, Darjeeling – Reminiscing a Bygone Colonial Era
If you are on a tour to the beautiful hill station, Darjeeling, during this New Year vacation, a leisurely stroll along the circular Mall road, and a visit to the angelic, St.Andrew’s church will be highly rewarding.
An old Anglican church with colonial architecture, St.Andrew’s church sure impresses every visitor. The church was built under the supervision of Captain Bishop in the year 1843.Many Scottish soldiers, Britishers and tea planters living in the Darjeeling area were the early worshippers of this church.
Though the church was badly damaged by an earthquake, it was rebuilt in the year 1873. Inside the church there are many inlaid marble tablets and brass plaques that glorify some of the oldest residents of Darjeeling. One of them belongs to Lt. General Lloyd who was known as the ’Discoverer’ of Darjeeling. You can also find another small brass plaque in memory of Charlotte Countess Canning, wife of Lord Canning, who was the Governor General during the First War of Independence.
The ambience inside the church is very spiritual, ethereal and quiet. A visit to this church is like a travel to bygone British era and will leave lingering memories in the minds of people.
Church Timings – Between March and November: On every Sunday, there is a morning service held at 9.00 am. Between December and February: On every Sunday, morning service is held at 9.30 am.
Every year the church holds a special Christmas Carol Service. The service is very famous among the residents and is attended by many.
