The Abu hills had been the abode of many sages and the legend goes that Mount Abu was the home of 33 crores Gods and Goddesses. The name “Abu” denotes ‘Son of Himalayas’: alternately Ar-Booda which means the Hall of Wisdom’, deriving the name from Atbauda the serpent who saved Nandi, Lord Shiva’s bull. The Adhar Devi Temple is one of the popular religious destinations, situated 3 kilometers from the main town of Mount Abu. You have to climb 365 stairs carved out of the mountain, inside a rocky cleave and has to be reached by crawling through a small opening into the cave. All the toil is worth it since there are beautiful statues inside the temple and a picturesque view of the forest around it. It is dedicated to the Goddess Durga. How it came to be known by that name is that the “Adhar” of the deity fell here. There is a common belief that the image of the Goddess was found there hanging in mid-air. This temple is a popular destination for pilgrimages, especially during the 9 days of the holy Navratri season.

Dilwara Temple

The Dilwara Temple can easily compete with the Taj Mahal due to its splendour and extraordinary architecture, renowned as the finest Jain temples in the world. The marvelously carved marble stones add to the grandeur. Though it looks very ordinary from outside, the temple interior displays the stupendous work of human craftsmanship at its best. It would leave you in awe of the engineering feat and the artistic finesse of these structures between the 11th and the 13th century AD when no transport or roads were available at a height of more than 1200 metres. The lush green hills give the temple the necessary ambience. The ornamental details of marble stone carvings of the pillars and the ceiling are phenomenal. Elephants were employed to transport huge blocks of marble stones from the Arasoori Hills at Ambaji to Mount Abu. The minutely carved ceilings, entryways, pillars, and panels throw light on the mind-boggling aesthetic appeal of this temple and their mastery over architecture. All the temples of Dilwara have the typical Gudu Mandapa and Navchowki. The Dilwara temples still serve as a popular Jain pilgrimage attraction. The temple complex has five major sections or temples devoted to the five Jain Trithankaras:

Shri Mahaveer Swami Temple – Constructed in the 16th Century, it was dedicated to Lord Mahaveer the 24th Tirthankara of the Jains. Relatively small, the upper wall sections, portray pictures of the porch painted by the craftsmen of Sirohi.

Shri AdiNath Temple also called as the Vimal Vasahi Temple was built by Vimal Shah, the Minister of Solanika ruler of Gujarat. This temple is dedicated to Shri Adinath Ji – The first Jain Trithankar and is the oldest of all the five temples. There is an open courtyard surrounded by finely decorated corridors with intricately carved marble stones. Small cells built inside this temple contain tiny carved images of the Jain saints decorated with the motifs of flowers and petals. The huge hall of the temple pillars is decorated with female figurines playing musical instruments. The temple also has a lovely “Guda Mandapa” – A simplistic hall embellished with Shri Adi Nath’ images. This temple is hugely popular due to its sheer size and majesty.

Shri ParshavNath Temple or the Khartar Vasahi Temple was constructed by the Mandika clan in the 15th Century A.D. It is the tallest shrine along with four big Mandapas among all the Dilwara temples. The meticulously carved pillars speak of the Jain temples’ architectural superiority.

Shri Rishabdaoji Temple or Peethalhar Temple has been titled so because in this temple most of the statues are built using ‘Pittal’ (Brass). It was built by Bhima Shah, a minister from Gujarat dynasty.

Shri NemiNathJi Temple or Luna Vasahi Temple was built by two brothers known as Tejpal and Vastupal, who dedicated this holy shrine to the 22nd saint of Jainism – Shri Nemi Nathji. This temple has the Rang Mandapa, a hall, which has 360 minuscule idols of Jain Trithankar all intricately crafted on marble, proving their artistic prowess, at times, even found superior to that of the Taj Mahal, among all these white marble idols, that of Shri Neminath Ji, is made up of black marble. Maharana Kumbha of Mewar built the pillars of this temple.

Gaumukh

You should make a visit to the Gaumukh Temple, built in the memory of the renowned Saint Vashishtha. The folklore says that this sage conducted a massive Yajna which gave birth to the four fiery Rajput clans. Close by, you would find the Agni Kund where the sacrificial fire burnt and was used by the Saint to perform the ritual of the yajna and created the stalwart Rajputs. You will also discover a spring nearby which is said to emanate from the mouth of a rock which was similar to a cow’s head. To commemorate the holy cow, a large marble statue of a cow was built, representative of Nandi, the bull who was Shiva’s vehicle. A stream of water flows from the mouth of the marble bull. Statues of Nandi, Saint Vashishth, Lord Ram and Lord Krishna are also found in the vicinity.
