The monsoon season in India brings with it the much-needed rain after the long and dry spell of summer. The south-west monsoon winds enter the Indian subcontinent in Kerala mostly in the month of June and this is the time when the whole state is lashed heavy rainfall. Often the sun comes out briefly after a spell of showers, followed by another spell of heavy rain.

This recurrent pattern of rain and warm sunshine makes the monsoon season in Kerala truly magical. During the monsoon season, the state gets incredibly transformed into a heavenly destination with the sky full of dark clouds. The first rain washes all the dust and dirt away making the entire state sparkle with lush greenery reiterating why it is called “God’s Own Country”.

If you happen to be in Kerala during the monsoon season, there are quite a few places that you can visit:

Thekkady

You will find numerous waterfalls in and around Thekkady that are at their full glory during the monsoon season. You can easily spend hours gazing at the sheer gorgeousness of the stunning waterfalls and soak in the surrounding beauty.

Munnar

Kerala is also known for its beautiful hill stations surrounded by tea plantations. Munnar is the most popular among these hill stations and the best time to visit Munnar is during the monsoon season. In fact, travelling in your car on the winding roads of Munnar while it’s raining is quite an experience.

Anaikatti

Anaikatti is another hill station which has not been explored properly by tourists yet but is equally beautiful. The place is surrounded by greenery with silvery streams and other water bodies which will be in full flow during the monsoon season. It is a unique getaway from the runaway madness of the urban jungle, a much-needed break in the otherwise rush of life.

Alleppey

The best way to spend time during the monsoon is to just relax in a houseboat on the backwaters in Alleppey, Kumarakom or Kuttanad. The shining coastline, palm-lined shores, the soothing cloudy sky will make your stay in a houseboat one of the most memorable in the rainy season.

Wayanad

If you love to explore the wildlife, then the monsoon season is the ideal time to visit Wayanad which has a couple of national parks with thick forests in close proximity. During the monsoon season, these forests will have thick vegetation. This is the time when the rare birds such as the hornbill come out in the open, thereby making it easier to spot them.

During peak seasons, the hill stations and beaches will be swarming with tourists, so the most peaceful time to visit Kerala is during the monsoon season when there are fewer tourists. Also, during the off-season, the hotels lower their rates by half to entice tourists to come to the state. Also, you will get to save on transportation vehicles and air tickets.

At Thekkady, Munnar, Wayanad, and Anaikatti you can stay at Sterling resorts. At these resorts, you will find numerous facilities such as fitness centre, spa, swimming pool, in-room dining, and more. Once you come back after enjoying the scenic locations, just relax by enjoying a swim in the pool or take a nap in your room.
