When we think of a mountain holiday, our minds immediately fly to the Himalayas and the Northern and North Eastern states.  We often associate these regions with mountaineering and jungle exploring pleasures. However, nothing could be further from the truth – the southern triangle of India has some of the most beautiful and scenic mountain ranges in the country. One such mountain range is Yercaud. With an abundance of flora and fauna, and surrounded by misty hills, Yercaud is one of the best holiday destinations you can hope to visit.

The name ‘Yeri Kadu’ literally translates to ‘forest by the lake’.  Apart from being a popular tourist location, Yercaud is also a region with a rich historical background thus acting as an interesting place of visit for history enthusiasts as well. The British discovered this hilly area in their search for cooler retreats from the hot areas of Madras, and fell in love with its scenic beauty, making it their summer retreat and hunting lodge.

Yercaud is a place designed for relaxation and a break from the hurried and stressful life of cities. However, it also consists of some interesting and beautiful places that you should visit when in this picturesque hill station. Some of the prominent must-see tourist locations in Yercaud are :

  • Yercaud Lake

Yercaud Lake is one of the most sought after destinations in Yercaud. It is a beautiful water body surrounded by lush greenery in the form of gardens and trees, making it an ideal habitat for shutterbugs. You can enjoy activities like paddle-boating on the lake waters, or just hang around the lake and enjoy the food and shops as well.

  • 32-km Loop Road

Get the feel of the mountains by driving around the various points and taking in the view. The 32 km long loop road is a joy to drive on. It is even better on a motorcycle or a cycle as it then allows you to check out the various points like the Lady’s Seat, Pagoda Point, Killayur Waterfall, etc. Whilst driving, you can also see the coffee plantations and the bamboo forests. The drive also gives you a taste of the culture of Yercaud as it passes through villages of Semmantham, Nagalur, Manjakuttai and Kaveri Peak.

It has a large number of parks and gardens known for their lush greenery. Anna Garden, Silk Farm, Rose Garden, Deer Park and the interesting Orchidarium are some of them. It is also home to partridges, snakes, bulbuls, kites, sparrows, swallows, paradise flycatchers, and more.

The Bears cave is located close to the Norton’s Bungalow. It is believed to have been a hideout spot for Tippu Sultan during the time of the war. The cave is an interpellation of two big rocks and is about seven feet below the ground. Tourists are not allowed beyond a few hundred meters as the pathway is strewn with fallen rocks. However, the cave from the outside itself is worthy of a visit.

  • Other activities

One can also do some interesting treks from here – the Chennai trekking club will help you to organise treks. A trek will not only help you witness some of the most breath-taking views of nature, but is also great for your health.

Another must see in Yercaud are its plantations. The hill station is renown for its beautiful plantations of coffee, tea and many others.

One of the oldest buildings in the area, The Grange is another site worth visiting. It was built by the first planters, and is believed to have been a vacation spot for British General Robert Clive.
